Despite a challenging market environment, the health insurance group Visana can report a solid net profit and continues to maintain a sound financial basis. With the launch of the first fully integrated care region in the Jura Arc, Visana is playing a pioneering role in the Swiss healthcare sector and striving for a future-oriented, affordable, high-quality healthcare system. In basic insurance, the number of persons insured with Visana has grown by 15,500.
Solid net profit despite challenging market environment
In a challenging environment shaped by global upheaval in the financial markets, rising inflation, war in Ukraine and high benefit costs, Visana is able to report solid net profit. The 2022 results show a loss of CHF -76 million (2021: CHF +69 million) on the back of sales of CHF 3.7 billion (2021: CHF 3.6 billion), mainly attributable to two factors: On one hand, for the benefit of its customers, Visana opted for basic insurance premiums that did not cover costs; on the other hand, volatile financial markets led to a negative financial result.
The results from the insurance segment amounted to CHF -36.7 million (2021: +37.5 million), which corresponds to a combined ratio of 101 percent for Visana (2021: 98.9 percent). The loss in compulsory health insurance amounted to CHF -70.2 million (2021: CHF -48.9 million). This contrasts with a profit of CHF 33.5 million in the top-up insurance segment (2021: CHF 86.4 million). Visana’s good solvency enabled it to absorb fluctuations in the capital markets and rising benefit costs in the insurance sector.
Visana continues to unreservedly meet all capital requirements for basic insurance under the Health Insurance Act and for top-up insurance under the Insurance Policies Act, and has above-average solvency.
Continually growing customer base and expansion of business activities
In the reporting year, Visana further expanded its customer base in both the private and business customer segments: The number of insured private customers (under basic and top-up insurance) grew by 12,200 to 847,600 (2021: 835,400). Insured persons with compulsory health insurance rose by 15,500 to 644,200 (2021: 628,700). In the business customer segment, customers continue to place their trust in Visana, even when market conditions are difficult. Here, the customer base increased to 16,500 business customers (2021: 16,250). This positive development means that Visana is an increasingly important player in the business customer segment throughout Switzerland.
With the acquisition of a minority stake in Liberty Pension Ltd, Visana is systematically expanding its business activities in the insurance and pensions sector, and will offer comprehensive pension solutions together with Liberty Pension Ltd in future. Based in the canton of Schwyz, the Swiss company Liberty Pension Ltd has been successfully specialising in independent pension solutions for private and business customers since 2005.
‘Réseau de l’Arc’ – a paradigm shift in the Swiss healthcare system
In cooperation with Swiss Medical Network and the Canton of Bern, Visana is launching the Swiss healthcare system’s first fully integrated care model – in the Jura Arc region. Its focus is on prevention and, accordingly, on maintaining members’ health. With full capitation, Visana aims to bring about a paradigm shift in the Swiss healthcare system: away from today’s misguided incentives for treatments that are as numerous and expensive as possible, and towards needs-based personalised treatment for customers. With ‘Réseau de l’Arc’, Visana is thus doing important pioneering work to counter the ongoing explosion in costs and the ever-rising insurance premiums.
