With an excellent result of CHF 59.1 million from investing activities (2022: -23.6 mn) and a profit of CHF 48.2 million in top-up insurance (2022: 33.5 mn), Visana achieved a good net profit of CHF 4.7 million in 2023 (2022: -76 mn). The result from the insurance segment amounted to CHF -51.5 million (2022: -36.7 mn), which corresponds to a combined ratio of 101.3 percent (2022: 101.0 percent). The loss in compulsory health insurance (CHI) amounted to CHF -99.7 million (2022: -70.2 mn). In particular, this was due to premiums not covering costs, coupled with sharp rises in healthcare costs in basic insurance.
Continual customer growth
The Visana Group has further enhanced its position as one of the leading providers of health insurance and top-up insurance in Switzerland. Visana impresses with its performance, wide range of products and dedicated staff. “The number of persons insured with us is constantly growing,” says Angelo Eggli, CEO of the Visana Group. “This demonstrates the trust that customers place in Visana.” As of 1 January 2024, Visana has 856,500 privately insured persons on its books (+8,900, 1/1/2023: 847,600), 655,500 of whom hold Visana’s compulsory health insurance (+11,300, 1/1/2023: 644,200). The business customers segment also continued to develop positively: 2023 ended with total premiums in force of CHF 617.5 million (+39.7 mn, 2022: CHF 577.8 mn) and around 16,750 businesses thanks to customer growth (+250, 1/1/2023: 16,500).
Visana continues its strategic development
Visana has considerable financial stability and above-average solvency. It meets all capital requirements for basic insurance as per HIA and for top-up insurance as per IPA. “We are well-equipped for purposeful further development,” confirms Angelo Eggli. This strategy is being pursued with great vigour, as evidenced by the implemented innovations, expansion of the range of insurance and pension products, and successful partnerships.
Pioneering role in integrated care
In cooperation with Swiss Medical Network and the Canton of Bern, Visana has founded the healthcare organisation Réseau de l’Arc in Bernese Jura and introduced ‘VIVA’, the first fully integrated basic insurance model in Switzerland. Visana is thus playing a pioneering role in the field of integrated care. In VIVA, the focus is on keeping the participating customers healthy. In addition, integrated care makes it possible to reduce false incentives and excessive medical care. This increases outcome efficiency and service quality for customers and curbs cost growth in the long term.
