With innovation, targeted strategic expansion of business activities and sustainable growth, the insurance group Visana is consistently maintaining its successful trajectory. The company continued to grow in 2024 and reinforced its market leadership in the Espace Mittelland region, as well as its position as one of the leading insurers in Switzerland.

Impressive financial results

“Visana is in excellent financial shape,” says Angelo Eggli, CEO of the Visana Group. Visana has considerable financial stability and above-average solvency. “This is the consequence of a long-term strategy and sustainable business conduct. Such stability benefits our policyholders.”

The excellent result of CHF 150.9 mn from investing activities (previous year: CHF 59.1 mn) and a profit of CHF 41.7 mn in top-up insurance (previous year: CHF 48.2 mn) contributed significantly to the pleasing net profit. The positive result in the insurance segment amounted to CHF 24.3 mn (previous year: CHF -51.5 mn), which corresponds to a combined ratio of 99.4 percent (previous year: 101.3 percent).

Compulsory health insurance (CHI) posted a loss of CHF -17.4 mn (previous year: CHF -99.7 mn). The negative CHI result was once again due to premiums failing to cover costs, coupled with sharp rises in healthcare costs in basic insurance. Total gross premiums exceeded the CHF 4 bn mark for the first time.

Continual growth in the number of insured persons

“The number of privately insured persons is growing steadily, as is our business clientele,” says Angelo Eggli. “Customers are placing their trust in our performance and innovativeness.”

Last year, the Visana Group further enhanced its position as one of the leading providers of health insurance and top-up insurance in Switzerland: Visana’s private customers grew in number by 31,000, and 696,000 of them hold compulsory health insurance with Visana (+40,500).

The number of new contracts with business customers also continued to develop positively: At the end of 2024, premiums in force amounted to CHF 649.9 mn (CHF +32.4 mn) and the number of business customers had grown to around 16,850 (+100).

Growth, innovation and integrated care

Implementation of the ‘Visana 2030’ strategy is driving the company’s ongoing sustainable evolution into an ‘all-lines insurer’. This strategy is being pursued with great vigour, using innovations, additional insurance and pension products, and successful strategic partnerships. The primary goal remains sustainable growth in the core private customers business (HIA and IPA) and business customers.

In basic health insurance, Visana is focusing heavily on the expansion of fully integrated care, in which all medical services, from basic care and hospital services, through to Spitex (home healthcare services) and care of the elderly, are provided centrally from a single source. This results in efficient and customer-friendly coordination of medical services delivery, which improves quality and reduces healthcare costs in the long term.

Following on from the successful launch of the alternative insurance model ‘VIVA’, which is geared towards fully integrated care, in the Jura Arc region In 2024, the product is now also being offered in Ticino as ‘VIVA – Rete Sant’Anna’. The next care region, around Zofingen Hospital, will follow in 2026. In order to establish fully integrated care throughout Switzerland, Visana has joined forces with Swiss Medical Network to found the association ‘VIVA Health Suisse’, which helps healthcare organisations to implement this alternative model.
