Frequently asked questions about accident insurance as per AIA/UVG
All employees in Switzerland are compulsorily covered by accident insurance under the Accident Insurance Act (AIA). Employees are individuals who pursue non-independent gainful employment as per OASI legislation.
Accident insurance is not compulsory for self-employed individuals and for persons who are not gainfully employed, such as homemakers. Furthermore, members of the military are subject to separate military insurance. Self-employed individuals in particular are advised to take out private accident insurance.
Insured persons are entitled to benefits from compulsory accident insurance in the event of occupational accidents (including accidents on the journey to or from work) or occupational illnesses. Good to know: Employees who work at least eight hours a week for the same employer are also insured against non-occupational accidents.
Premiums for occupational accident and occupational illness insurance are paid by the employer. Premiums for non-occupational accident insurance are generally borne by the employee; the employer deducts them from their salary.
Insurance cover ends on the 31st day after the day on which entitlement to at least half the salary ends. Extended accident cover can be arranged with Visana for a maximum of six months (arranged insurance extension) or accident cover can be immediately included (in health insurance) by notifying the relevant private insurer.
Anyone who works at least eight hours a week for the same employer is compulsorily insured against occupational and non-occupational accidents under the Accident Insurance Act AIA. However, if you are self-employed, unemployed, or employed by a company for less than eight hours a week, you must take out top-up accident insurance with your health insurer.
