Who is Liberty?

Our partner Liberty has been operating as Switzerland’s first independent online pension platform since 2001. Liberty is a modern technology company that manages over four billion Swiss francs in pension assets and serves companies in all of Switzerland’s language regions with its pension fund solutions. With innovative digital tools, Liberty makes occupational pension funds simple, transparent and efficient.

How the pension fund works, as per OPA/BVG

Contributions to occupational pension funds as per OPA/BVG depend on age and constitute a certain percentage of the ‘insured salary’: the gross annual salary minus a coordination deduction of CHF 25,725. Employers cover at least half, often even more.

Younger people pay lower contributions and older people pay higher ones – so retirement assets grow over time. As an employer, you register new staff, report changes in salary, and pay contributions. Many processes run digitally and efficiently, thanks to the online customer portal.

The pension fund manages the money, pays benefits upon retirement, invalidity or death, and allows early withdrawal under certain conditions, e.g. for home ownership.

All digital: with Liberty, pension fund administration is this easy

Liberty is a pioneer in efficient digital pension fund administration. As an SME owner, you benefit from maximum transparency and simple time-saving procedures. With the online customer portal, you and your staff can access all pension fund data online, at any time. The digital opening process allows your pension fund to be set up quickly and easily. Documents, performance reports and personal pension statements are provided transparently and digitally.

Occupational pension fund benefits – how to proceed

  1. You report the case directly, using the customer portal. It is filed digitally and in compliance with data protection requirements.

  2. Your staff can view their respective pension fund data online and add to it if necessary.

  3. Liberty assesses the case in close cooperation with our reinsurer’s specialist department.

  4. After a successful assessment outcome, the benefits are activated.

Frequently asked questions about OPA/BVG

A pension fund is compulsory for all employees who are insured under OASI and earn an annual salary of at least CHF 22,680 (as of 2025). As an employer, you must register such staff with a pension fund. There is no OPA obligation for fixed-term employment contracts lasting less than three months.

The best pension fund depends on your individual needs. Liberty’s flexible solutions, digital services and attractive conditions make it a good choice. To find the optimal solution for your company, it is a good idea to seek advice.

Switching involves several steps: terminating the contract with your current pension fund, selecting a new pension solution, transferring the pension capital and informing staff. Liberty supports you throughout the process.

When taking up a position, new staff bring their vested benefits with them. These are transferred to their new pension fund.

The notice period is usually six months, although it is possible to shorten it. Setting up usually takes several weeks, depending on the complexity of the previous pension scheme. The digital registration process in the customer portal makes setting up particularly quick and straightforward.
