Employees can extend their insurance cover for non-occupational accidents by up to six months. To do so, they must arrange an insurance extension with their last accident insurer before the 31-day cover-extension period expires. The Accident Insurance Act (AIA) stipulates that benefits remain unchanged. These include medical treatment in a general ward, daily accident allowance, invalidity pension and survivor’s pension.
Tip: prevent gaps in cover
Anyone who does not wish to be caught out by a gap in cover would be well advised to arrange an insurance extension. The premium for this is currently CHF 45 for one month, or CHF 270 for the maximum term of six months. Extensions can only be arranged via our website: visana.ch/arranged-insurance-extension.
Employees can apply for the desired insurance cover quickly and easily, using the online form. Good to know: The last employer must hold valid compulsory accident insurance cover with Visana as per AIA. It is no longer possible to apply by means of a pay-in slip.
With an arranged insurance extension, employees working at least eight hours a week can prolong statutory non-occupational accident insurance for up to six months. This is necessary, for example, in the case of unpaid leave or a change of job, as insurance cover via the previous employer automatically expires 31 days after the end of the employment relationship.
