HMO plus combines tried-and-trusted general practitioner treatment with modern types of care delivery to provide you with coordinated medical care that is fast, flexible and a perfect fit.
When you take out insurance with Visana, you choose a general practitioner from our network. This individual coordinates your medical care. In addition, you also have access to a telemedical advice centre and selected partner pharmacies. This ensures you receive the right medical help for the situation and your current need.

How the HMO plus model works

You choose your general practitioner from the HMO plus network when you sign your contract.

You have three options if you have health-related questions, symptoms or other concerns:
- contact your general practitioner;
- call the telemedical advice centre; or
- go to a partner pharmacy.

If necessary, your general practitioner or the telemedical advice centre will refer you to a specialist or hospital.

When you sign up to the HMO plus model, you agree to abide by the following conditions:

- You must always make first contact with your general practitioner, the telemedical advice centre or a partner pharmacy; see below for exceptions.
- Only your general practitioner or the telemedical advice centre can refer you to a specialist; see below for exceptions.
- If available and medically justifiable, you must always purchase generics or biosimilars instead of more expensive original products when you require medication.
- You must agree to purchase medicines required for follow-up or long-term treatment from a prescribed pharmacy.
- You must obtain medical aids and Spitex home care services from providers affiliated to the health organisation.
You may obtain treatment without requiring a referral in the following cases:
- emergencies (worldwide)
- ophthalmologist appointments
- dental treatment
- gynaecological examinations

Your general practitioner can refer you to a specialist or hospital and will report the referral to us. There is nothing else that you need to do.
With ‘Emergency-Finder’, you are optimally equipped in critical medical situations. This app helps you to assess your symptoms correctly and shows you the nearest emergency ward in real time, along with its current capacity.
The cost-free service is available in the City of Bern and the surrounding metropolitan area.

If your GP is part of the HMO plus network, you can of course choose to continue with them. You will find the current list of doctors here.
No. You can also call the telemedical advice centre or visit a partner pharmacy. Only referrals to specialists are made exclusively by your GP or the telemedical advice centre.
In an emergency, you can go straight to an emergency doctor or a hospital. Afterwards, inform your general practitioner or the telemedical advice centre within 30 days.
