Frequently asked questions on insurance for families
No. There is no insurance product specifically for families in Switzerland. However, Visana does provide attractive family discounts that benefit your budget.
Discounts on basic insurance: You get a discount of at least 74% for your first and second child. This figure even rises to a 90% discount on the adult premium from the third child. However, all children must be on the same family policy.
Useful information: The discount is based on compulsory basic insurance with free choice of doctor and the statutory deductible. This amount may vary slightly in alternative insurance models or for optional deductibles.
Discounts on top-up insurance: You get a 50% discount for your second child and every additional child in your family. However, the same top-up insurance plans must have been taken out for the children – e.g. Hospital, Outpatient, Complementary or Basic – and the children must be insured under the same family policy.
The answer to this question depends entirely on your personal needs. Top-up insurance fills important gaps in your basic insurance cover. Not just that, you also receive contributions towards the cost of glasses and contact lenses, vaccinations, alternative medicine and medication. If you want more comfort and privacy when you’re in hospital, hospital top-up insurance can be worthwhile.
If you have children, we recommend dental top-up insurance. This is because a lot of insurance policies will then also cover the cost of orthodontic treatment. Important: If you take out insurance early, you will not generally need a dentist’s certificate.
Basic insurance:
You can register your baby with your health insurance fund before it is born. Then you only need to submit their name and date of birth at a later date. The only important thing is that you take out basic insurance for your child within three months of the birth.
Top-up insurance:
We recommend registering your baby before the birth to ensure they have the best possible cover right from the start. If you already register your child before the birth, you often do not have to complete a health questionnaire.
When your child turns 18, they become subject to the compulsory insurance requirement in their own right. This means that
- their insurance does not automatically continue as before. Your health insurance fund will contact your child directly or explain the next steps to you.
- the contract has to be transferred to your child. When your child is 18, they can decide for themselves which health insurance fund they would like to provide their basic and top-up insurance.
It is also worth checking your top-up insurance plans. Some products are no longer as affordable or relevant when your child becomes a young adult.
