Well protected in everyday life

A baby brings not only plenty of love, but also lots of new changes at home. It is therefore worth reviewing the insured sum under your household contents insurance and adjusting it if necessary in order to avoid underinsurance. For personal liability insurance, it is important for the insured persons to be listed as a “multi-person household” so that the child is also covered.

  • Additional cover for valuables (e.g. jewellery during childbirth)

privathaftpflichtversicherung

Even small children can cause significant damage. Personal liability insurance protects you against the financial consequences of everyday family life.

  • Damage caused by children to third parties (e.g. broken glasses, water-related accidents)

  • Insurance for borrowed or rented baby equipment

  • Protection in the event of an accident (e.g. at friends’ homes, in hotels)

  • Defence against unjustified claims

rechtsschutzversicherung

Legal protection insurance provides legal assistance in the event of a dispute, for instance with an employer or a hospital.

  • Legal advice for disputes relating to maternity leave

  • Cover for lawyer’s fees and proceedings

Frequently asked questions relating to pregnancy and childbirth

Basic insurance pays for the following benefits during pregnancy and after your baby has been born:

  • Seven check-ups and two ultrasound examinations prior to childbirth, including the costs of the first trimester test
  • For high-risk pregnancies: Additional check-ups and ultrasound examinations
  • Three breastfeeding counselling sessions
  • CHF 150 for midwife-led antenatal classes
  • Benefits for childbirth in hospital, at home or at a birthing centre on the list of hospitals
  • Home visits by midwives for up to 56 days after childbirth
  • Postnatal medical check-ups six to ten weeks after childbirth

Yes, you can. You can switch your compulsory basic insurance to a different provider while you’re pregnant, just as you can at any other time. If you do, please remember that you must generally give notice by 30 November if you intend to switch on 1 January.

Tell your health insurance fund as soon as your doctor has confirmed your pregnancy.

Yes, you should generally be able to. Pregnancy is not a reason to refuse you top-up insurance. Most top-up insurance plans (e.g. hospital top-up insurance) include qualifying periods for maternity. This means that the insurance will not provide pregnancy or maternity benefits during the first few months. However, there are also certain types of insurance you cannot take out while you are pregnant. These include daily allowance insurance (IPA/VVG), for example.

That depends on which top-up insurance product you choose. Visana’s Outpatient top-up insurance complements the benefits provided by basic insurance. It covers up to 90% of the costs for:

  • check-ups and ultrasound examinations (from Outpatient II level);
  • medically prescribed prenatal vitamins and medication that is not covered by basic insurance;
  • prenatal exercise and recovery courses up to a maximum of CHF 300 (from Outpatient lll level).

After you have given birth, you have three months to register your baby with a health insurance fund. Your baby will be retroactively covered by compulsory basic insurance from the date of birth.

Our tip: Take out the insurance before your baby is born. Pre-birth registration has many advantages:

  • Your child is properly insured from day one.
  • No medical examination is required for most top-up insurance plans.
  • You can devote all your time and attention to your newborn baby once you have given birth.
