The premiums for 2027 have been announced. Every year, the Federal Council and the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) outline how premiums will change across Switzerland and in each canton. In 2027, premiums will rise across Switzerland by an average of 5%.
Premiums vary depending on individual circumstances and place of residence.
What are premiums?
As an insurer, we have to cover the costs of medical treatment incurred by the people insured with us through revenue from premiums. The premiums for basic insurance therefore reflect developments in healthcare costs. When the cost of medical services rises, premiums are affected as well.
Why are premiums rising?
The rise in premiums is primarily a result of rising healthcare costs. Various factors contribute to this.
- The population is making greater use of medical services.
- People are living longer and, on average, require more medical services.
- New medical possibilities, treatments and technologies are improving medical care, but this can also drive up costs.
- The catalogue of benefits covered by basic insurance continues to evolve and now includes new or additional services.
- High medicine prices and the continued underuse of lower-cost generics are putting pressure on healthcare costs.
- Unnecessary, duplicate or poorly coordinated treatment generates additional costs.
How do Visana’s premiums compare to the industry as a whole?
Visana’s premiums are developing in line with the Swiss market.
How much is my individual premium?
Your individual premium is determined by your canton of residence, premium region, age, chosen insurance model and deductible, among other factors. Regional differences in healthcare costs also affect premium levels.
Under compulsory basic insurance, insurers are required to accept all applicants, regardless of their state of health. Differences in the composition of the insured population and in the regional use of medical services may therefore also have an impact on cost and premium trends.
Do health insurers make a profit from premiums?
Revenue collected from compulsory basic insurance premiums is earmarked and must be used to finance benefits as well as the reserves required by law. Premiums are set at a level that covers the expected costs and ensures the financial stability of the basic insurance scheme.
How is the revenue from premiums used?
The majority of the revenue from basic insurance premiums is used to cover healthcare costs incurred with service providers, for example doctors, hospitals, pharmacies and therapists.
Visana is committed to keeping administrative costs low.
What is Visana doing to ease the burden for premium payers?
One of Visana’s key tasks is to rigorously check invoices. By doing so, we are helping to prevent unjustified or incorrect charges, relieving some of the financial burden for premium payers.
At the same time, we are pursuing a stable and sustainable business and premium policy, while managing our resources responsibly.
What’s more, we are committed to better coordination of medical care. Under the VIVA basic insurance model, treatment, medical therapy and other healthcare services are coordinated within an integrated care system. This helps to avoid duplication and improve the quality of care.
VIVA is currently available in the Jura Arc, Ticino, the Zofingen region (Aare Network), the city of Bern and its surrounding areas (Bern Network).
What’s changing from 1 January 2027
2027 will bring a few changes to your health insurance.
Redistribution of environmental taxes
The Confederation levies incentive taxes on environmentally harmful substances. This money is then channelled back to the public via the health insurers.
Discount for children until the age of 18
Children aged under 18 receive a generous children’s discount. For legal reasons, when you turn 18, you move into a different age group, effective from 1 January the following year. This means your premium increases.
Discount for young people until the age of 25
When you reach the age of 25, we are no longer permitted to offer you a youth discount under the Health Insurance Act. You are reallocated to the statutory adult premium. To keep your premium lower, we recommend choosing a higher deductible.
For various top-up insurance policies, premium levels are determined on the basis of age. In some cases, there are gradations within specific age groups. You can find the exact gradations in the relevant overview.
