Premium reductions at a glance

Article 65 of the Health Insurance Act entitles insured persons with modest financial resources to a premium reduction. The authorities in their canton of residence transfer the premium reduction directly to their health insurance fund. This support is not automatically available in all cantons. It is therefore worth asking if you are entitled to a reduction. Make use of your right and ask the authorities in your canton of residence.

Useful information

  • If the office in your canton of residence decides that you are entitled to a premium reduction, it will inform us accordingly.

  • Your next premium invoice will show your corrected premium or credit for the amount you have overpaid.

  • The Health Insurance Act does not permit us to record the premium reduction in your policy. For this reason, it will only appear on your premium invoice.

Premium reduction for people resident abroad

Are you insured in Switzerland, but have modest financial resources and are resident in an EU Member State, Iceland or Norway? If so, you can apply for a premium reduction too.

You will find more information at www.kvg.org/en/.

Frequently asked questions about premium reductions

No. The Cantons transfer the premium reduction contributions directly to the health insurers, who then make sure that the contributions are deducted from the next premium invoice.

Under Article 65 of the Health Insurance Act (HIA/KVG), the Cantons grant premium reductions to insured persons in modest financial circumstances. The Cantons pay the premium reduction contributions directly to these individuals’ health insurers, who then make sure that the contributions are deducted from the next premium invoice.

You are eligible for a premium reduction if you have compulsory health insurance (basic insurance) with a health insurer recognised by the federal government, and if your income and financial circumstances justify financial assistance. Your canton of residence assesses your eligibility, the amount and the timing of the premium reduction.
