Identifying phishing and suspicious communication attempts

Fraudulent emails, text messages and phone calls, in which criminals pose as Visana staff, are a recurring problem. In these fraudulent messages, you are asked to disclose personal details, such as usernames, passwords, account numbers or even credit card information.

How to spot phishing attempts

The following tips can help you to spot such messages and protect yourself against fraud attempts:

  • The message does not come from an official Visana address (altered company name, e.g. john.sample@viansa.ch).

  • The sender applies pressure and demands rapid action.

  • Messages with linguistic errors, recognisable by incorrect wording or an unprofessional tone.

  • Contains links to fake or suspicious websites. In cases of uncertainty, do not click on any links.

How to protect yourself against phishing attempts

Tip: Always use the customer portal myVisana, either online or in the Visana app, to edit your data securely.

  1. Never divulge confidential information, such as passwords, account numbers or insurance details, via email.

  2. Regularly install updates on your smartphone, computer and tablet, so as to close security gaps.

  3. Is an unknown person asking you to make payments, fill in forms or provide details? Do not respond.

  4. Obtain information from trustworthy sources only, such as visana.ch or priminfo.admin.ch.

  5. Call us on 0848 848 899 (DE/FR/IT) or email us at feedback@visana.ch.

  6. Forward phishing attempts to the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).

Unwanted marketing calls

Unwanted marketing calls are annoying, both for insured persons and for us as an insurer. This is because the people at the other end are usually dubious intermediaries who make unrealistic promises about basic insurance premiums, based on false information.

Those who make unwanted marketing calls (e.g. call centres, intermediaries etc.) often seem to be well informed and to know details about insurance that has been taken out, or about family status. It is unclear where they obtain this information, but it certainly does not come from Visana. We do not pass on any customer data to third parties. Data protection is of paramount importance to us.

How to protect yourself against marketing calls

By taking the right protective measures, you remain in control of your data and decide for yourself who is allowed to contact you.

  1. Hang up immediately and do not disclose any personal details.

  2. Is the caller trustworthy? Is there anything suspicious?

  3. If in doubt, call us on 0848 848 899 (DE/FR/IT) or email us at feedback@visana.ch.

Have you received a phishing email? Was someone pretending to be a Visana representative? Report fraud attempts to us, so that we can investigate them.
