Important information about hospital lists at a glance

Anyone with hospital top-up insurance enjoys a comprehensive range of services anywhere in Switzerland. However, cost coverage may be restricted in individual cases.

If you have taken out hospital top-up insurance, you enjoy attractive benefits in nearly every hospital and ward in Switzerland.

In exceptional cases, however, Visana may refuse cost coverage for certain hospitals, either in full or in part. This prevents excessively high tariffs from negatively impacting the premiums for your hospital top-up insurance.

Below you will find the hospitals with which Visana has a contract, as well as those for which we provide no or only partial cost coverage for inpatient treatment.

Our contracted hospitals

You can be sure of getting fair terms and additional services in our contracted hospitals because these are the hospitals with which we negotiate not only attractive tariffs but also genuine added value for you.

Hospitals subject to restrictions

If you have hospital top-up insurance with Visana, you are generally entitled to full cost coverage for inpatient treatment in all Swiss acute-care hospitals. However, if Visana is unable to agree a tariff with a particular hospital, it will be listed either as not recognised (no cost coverage) or as recognised with limited cost coverage, meaning that we will reimburse only a defined maximum tariff and you will have to pay any additional costs yourself.

This arrangement is intended to prevent excessive hospital tariffs from driving up your insurance premiums unnecessarily. The list of restrictions of hospital choice shows the hospitals in question and how the maximum tariffs are calculated and applied.

Please contact your benefits centre in good time before your admission to hospital. We will be happy to advise you and explain how you can avoid non-covered costs.

How to plan for hospitalisation

  1. Check whether your hospital or the insured ward is on one of the two hospital lists.

  2. To avoid additional costs, choose an alternative hospital or clinic from the list.

  3. Unsure whether you will incur additional costs or what the best alternative is? Call our benefits centre on 031 357 80 90 or contact us by email – we are here for you.

Emergency admissions

Emergency admissions are excluded from these restrictions.

We will be happy to advise you and discuss the procedure so that you can avoid non-covered costs if possible.

Frequently asked questions about the hospital list

Hospital top-up insurance offers you greater comfort and more privacy during inpatient hospital stays. Hospitals negotiate the tariffs applied in such cases directly with Visana.

To prevent excessive tariffs from driving hospital top-up insurance premiums too high, Visana can exclude individual hospitals from its hospital top-up insurance. This can happen, for example, if Visana and a particular hospital cannot reach an agreement on tariffs.

On one hand, hospital lists show you the hospitals with which Visana has entered into contracts. On the other hand, they also show those that are excluded from Visana’s hospital top-up insurance.

At a hospital that is on the list of restrictions of hospital choice or the list of hospitals without a Visana contract, you might incur additional costs as an insured person. This is because inpatient treatment at these hospitals is wholly or partially excluded from our hospital top-up insurance.

Please contact your benefits centre in good time before your admission to hospital. We will gladly advise you and explain how you can avoid unnecessary non-covered costs.

Emergency admissions are excluded from these restrictions.

The hospital lists specify the hospitals where the costs of inpatient treatment are only partially covered, or not at all, by Visana’s hospital top-up insurance.

These lists also show you which wards (general, semi-private or private) are affected by the restrictions, and which alternative hospitals and clinics are nearby.
