For more than 20 years, the TARMED tariff system has been used in Switzerland for the billing of outpatient medical services. This has now been replaced by the new tariff scheme TARDOC. With around 2,600 items (as compared to the previous 4,500 items), TARDOC significantly simplifies the billing process.

TARDOC also takes account of current medical developments; it contains a more up-to-date list of items, which also more accurately reflect actual costs and specific services.

The aim is for these services to be regularly adjusted throughout Switzerland in line with evolving medical standards.

Alongside TARDOC, flat-rate outpatient charges are being introduced for the first time in Switzerland. Flat-rate outpatient charges have been adopted as part of a new system that sets fixed fees for certain types of treatment. Flat-rate outpatient charges are based on the flat-rate charges, which have been used for inpatient treatment for a number of years.

This adjustment will involve a more substantial change, however it will also simplify billing.

The previous TARMED system dates back to the year 2004 and no longer correctly represents the wide variety of treatments available today. The new TARDOC along with flat-rate outpatient charges are intended to ensure fairer remuneration for medical services, while reducing administrative costs and ensuring quality of care over the long term.

• There will be no significant changes for you: In principle, everything will remain as it was before for you as an insured person. Treatment costs will not be changing as the new billing system is cost-neutral.
• Potential delays at the start: We are doing everything we can to ensure that the switch to the new system is as seamless as possible. However, it is possible that processing times may be slightly longer in some cases in the immediate aftermath of the switch.

Your treatment will be billed through your doctor as usual also from 2026. However, from 1 January 2026, you will increasingly receive an additional document along with your bill or reimbursement receipt. This additional document contains multiple QR codes. These QR codes contain all of the information that is printed on the reimbursement receipt and can be read electronically by V⁠i⁠s⁠a⁠n⁠a. In future, please submit this QR code sheet to us together with your reimbursement receipt to ensure that billing is processed more quickly and securely for you.

It is possible that the amounts indicated in bills may change slightly in some cases. These changes are caused by the new tariff structure and not by more expensive services.

If your bill contains a sheet with one or more QR codes, please submit this QR code sheet together with your reimbursement receipt, either digitally or by post. The QR code sheet can be found on the last page of your bill.
