Frequently asked questions about dental insurance

Dental insurance and dental top-up insurance are one and the same. Such insurance covers the costs of dental treatment not covered by compulsory basic insurance.

Dental costs can quickly add up. Be it for dental hygiene, braces or regular check-ups at the dentist – dental top-up insurance can pay off by keeping the costs of dental treatment within reasonable limits.

With eight different benefit categories, Visana’s dental insurance also enables you to tailor your cover to suit your budget and individual needs.

Dental top-up insurance is worthwhile for anyone who wants cover that goes beyond the benefits provided by statutory basic insurance and who values high-quality dental treatment.

Those who require expensive services, such as bridges, implants or orthodontic treatment, can also profit from dental insurance.

The benefits provided depend on the health insurer and the specific insurance model. With Visana, dental insurance can be chosen according to personal needs and individual budgets, thanks to eight different benefit categories.

Our dental top-up insurance covers the costs of treatment and materials, including dental technicians’ services, e.g. for the following treatments:

  • dental check-ups, including x-rays and dental hygiene;
  • restorative dental treatment, such as fillings or root canal treatment;
  • orthodontic treatment, e.g. for misaligned jaws or teeth;
  • dental prostheses;
  • periodontal treatment for inflammation of the gum tissue.

Our dental insurance does not cover accident-related or cosmetic dental treatment, or dental care products.

Dental top-up insurance from Visana does not cover the costs of accident-related dental treatment, of cosmetic dental treatment, such as tooth whitening (bleaching) or aligner braces, or of dental care products.

Dental insurance also makes sense for adults. Visana’s eight benefit categories enable you to tailor your dental top-up insurance to your needs. The insurance can be taken out at any time if, when the application is submitted, your teeth are healthy and no treatment is pending.

With dental top-up insurance, as with other types of top-up insurance: the earlier, the better – ideally while still in childhood. In fact, if you insure your child before their 4th birthday, there is no need for a medical examination.
