Frequently asked questions
With hospital top-up insurance, you decide for yourself which hospital to be treated in and how much privacy you would like. Hospital top-up insurance pays for costs that are covered only partially, or not at all, by basic insurance. It protects you against additional costs and guarantees optimal service.
Compulsory basic insurance only covers a stay in the general ward of a recognised Swiss hospital (except in emergencies). Non-covered costs can arise, particularly in the case of hospital stays outside the canton of residence – in a so-called “non-listed hospital”.
We have the right hospital top-up insurance to meet every requirement:
In this model, you have a free choice of hospital throughout Switzerland. This is particularly worthwhile if you live in a rural area where there are not so many hospitals.
If you opt for the Hospital semi-private model, you have a free choice of hospital and doctor throughout Switzerland. You stay in a double room and benefit from greater comfort.
In the Hospital private model, you have a free choice of doctor throughout Switzerland. You will often be treated by the senior consultant. You stay in a single room with maximum comfort. In addition, costs are fully covered, even in the event of emergencies abroad.
Stay flexible with our Hospital Flex model. Before any admission to hospital, you decide whether you wish to stay in the general, semi-private or private ward. Such flexibility makes this model more affordable than the top-up insurance models Hospital private and Hospital semi-private.
Hospital top-up insurance offers you greater flexibility and comfort if you need to go to hospital. The Hospital general model is worthwhile if you wish to be admitted to an expensive hospital outside your canton of residence. The Hospital semi-private and Hospital private models are worthwhile if you want greater comfort and wish to stay in a double or single room. In addition, these models give you a free choice of doctor.
Hospital top-up insurance pays for benefits that are covered only partially, or not at all, by basic insurance. This includes, for example, stays in hospitals outside the canton of residence. Depending on the model, you also have a free choice of doctor and Visana contributes towards the costs of visits to health resorts.
1. Deductible
This is the amount that you must pay each year before the health insurance covers any costs at all. The deductible depends on the chosen model and ranges from CHF 300 to CHF 2,500 per year.
2. Retention fee
Once your deductible has been paid, your health insurance fund covers 90% of costs. You pay the remaining 10% as a retention fee, but this is capped at CHF 700 per year for adults and CHF 350 for children.
3. Daily hospital contribution
For inpatient stays, you also pay a contribution of CHF 15 per day, as defined by law. This does not apply to children, young adults under the age of 25 who are in education, or women during maternity.
