Hospital daily allowance insurance at a glance
Hospital daily allowance insurance pays you an agreed amount for each day you’re in hospital. What you do with this money is entirely up to you. For example, you could:
-
cover loss of earnings;
-
pay for household help or childcare;
-
fund the cost of a single or double room in hospital.
If you would rather receive a fixed amount instead of a daily allowance, hospital lump-sum insurance is just the right thing for you.
These are the benefits
For each day you spend in hospital as an inpatient, you receive the insured sum that you have chosen for the term agreed in the contract. This can be from 30 to a maximum of 90 days. You define your daily allowance in accordance with your needs: the insurable hospital daily allowance can range from CHF 50 to a maximum of CHF 500 in multiples of fifty francs.
-
Commencement of benefits: Decide whether you want your daily allowance to be paid from your second or fourth day in hospital.
-
Indemnity period: Choose between 30, 60 or 90 days per calendar year.
-
Accident: Accident coverage can be excluded, for example, because you have accident insurance elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions about hospital daily allowance insurance
Hospital daily allowance insurance provides you with cover for the additional costs that arise during a hospital stay – for instance, because little or none of your salary is still being paid, or because you have to pay for childcare. You are completely free to spend the daily allowance as you wish.
Both protect you from the financial consequences of a hospital stay. However, with daily allowance insurance, you receive a certain amount for each day of your stay, whereas with hospital lump-sum insurance, Visana pays you one specific pre-determined sum. This can be up to CHF 15,000. With either type of insurance, you are free to use the money as you wish.
Hospital daily allowance insurance only provides a daily allowance if the insured person is actually hospitalised.
In contrast, the other type of daily allowance insurance is a loss-of-income insurance. This is not linked to a hospital stay and is more a matter of financial provision. For example, if you are an employee and unable to work for a prolonged period due to an illness or accident, your employer is legally obliged to continue paying your salary – but only for a limited time. With daily allowance insurance, you can protect your income for a period of up to 730 days.
Voluntary daily allowance insurance as per the Health Insurance Act (HIA/KVG) is also available to people who are not in gainful employment. This is particularly suitable for homemakers, as well as for people in education or training.
Daily allowance insurance that is not linked to a hospital stay can also be taken out with Visana.
Hospital daily allowance insurance enables a stress-free hospital stay if you are an employee with only a limited entitlement to continued payment of salary, or if you are self-employed and therefore receive no continued salary payments at all. Such insurance is beneficial for parents because it enables them to pay for childcare or domestic assistance, for example. Generally speaking, if you are worried about potential additional costs arising from a hospital stay, hospital daily allowance insurance is exactly what you need.
No. You are completely free to spend the money as you wish.
This statutory contribution, which is the same at every hospital and with every health insurance fund, is your contribution towards the cost of your hospital stay. At CHF 15 per day, it is roughly equivalent to the amount you save on food, electricity and water costs at home.
This insurance can be taken out by anyone aged 1 or over, who lives or works in Switzerland.
You can choose the daily allowance that you wish to receive, from between CHF 50 and CHF 500, in increments of CHF 50.
An application has to be submitted. Simply arrange a consultation – we will be happy to help you.
No, the hospital invoice is sufficient. However, Visana reserves the right to make individual queries.
In maternity cases, the hospital daily allowance is paid if the insurance has been in place for at least three years before childbirth, and the birth occurs after the sixth month of pregnancy.
