Our insurance solutions
Be it in the context of illness, hospitalisation, nursing care or agriculture – with daily allowance insurance from Visana, you are financially secure.
An illness or accident can render you unable to work for a prolonged period. This may result in a loss of income. When employees are in such situations, the employer is legally obliged to continue paying their salary, but only for a limited amount of time. With daily allowance insurance as per the Insurance Policies Act (IPA/VVG), you have the option of securing your income for up to 730 days.
Benefits of daily allowance insurance as per IPA/VVG
With daily allowance insurance as per IPA/VVG, you are entitled to the following benefits, after expiry of the waiting period specified in the contract:
- Daily allowance from as little as 25% incapacity to work.
- If the incapacity to work is 66.66% or above, the benefits are paid at a level of 100%.
- You set the insured daily allowance yourself, between CHF 5 and CHF 685.
- You also choose the waiting period, from the following options: 0-7, 10, 14, 21, 28, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 240, 270 and 360 days.

Voluntary daily allowance insurance as per the Health Insurance Act (HIA/KVG) provides benefits in the event of illness, accident or maternity. It is particularly suitable for persons who are not in employment, such as homemakers or people in training. Daily allowance insurance as per HIA/KVG helps to bridge financial gaps in the event of illness or accident. You set the daily allowance yourself, between CHF 5 and CHF 30.
Benefits of daily allowance insurance as per HIA/KVG
With daily allowance insurance as per HIA/KVG, you are entitled to the following benefits, after expiry of the waiting period specified in the contract:
- Daily allowance in the event of at least 50% incapacity to work.
- Benefits are calculated according to the degree of incapacity to work.
- Upon at least 75% incapacity to work, Visana pays 100% of the daily allowance.
Possible waiting periods: 14, 21, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 270 or 360 days. After expiry of the waiting period, your daily allowance can be paid out for 720 days.

Top-ups for agricultural insurance
Agricultural assistant insurance
If you are a farmer, and take out agricultural daily allowance insurance with a daily allowance of at least CHF 20 and a waiting period of at most 30 days, agricultural assistant insurance is automatically included. Agricultural assistant insurance provides compensation of CHF 30 per day worked by a replacement worker, for a maximum of 60 days. It thus covers part of the cost of bringing in a temporary agricultural assistant.
Temporary staff insurance
Temporary staff insurance can also be taken out to top up agricultural insurance. It insures temporary staff and day labourers who are not subject to the Accident Insurance Act (AIA/UVG), against the financial consequences of occupational accidents.
The benefits of temporary staff insurance include:
- medical costs;
- daily accident allowance of up to CHF 50;
- lump-sum invalidity benefit of CHF 50,000 with progression up to 350% (i.e.: insured sum of CHF 50,000, maximum payout of CHF 175,000);
- lump-sum death benefit of up to CHF 25,000.

If someone requires care in a nursing home, this can result in high costs over many years. The exact costs depend on the level of care required and the associated expenses in each case. If the person in need of care is not adequately insured, they or their next of kin have to cover part of the care costs themselves in such cases.
Although compulsory health insurance does cover the costs of the nursing care itself, the person concerned has to pay the costs of accommodation and board themselves. This is where nursing care daily allowance insurance comes in.
Benefits of nursing care daily allowance insurance
Compulsory health insurance covers most of the costs of medical treatment and care in a nursing home. However, the costs of accommodation and board are borne by the person in need of care. These can easily amount to CHF 100,000 per year and place a heavy strain on, or even exhaust, personal assets in next to no time.
When people with chronic illnesses or in need of care have to stay in institutions or wards, nursing care daily allowance insurance covers the costs that are not covered by compulsory health insurance, up to the insured daily allowance amount, which you yourself choose, from between CHF 15 and CHF 200. Here, it is worth taking precautions early: The younger the insured person, the lower the premium.
The nursing care daily allowance is paid after expiry of the 730-day waiting period, for up to 3,650 days.
Family discount: You get a 50% discount on Visana top-up insurance premiums for the second child and every additional child in your family who is insured with Visana. This discount is granted until your child turns 18.

With hospital daily allowance insurance, you receive an agreed amount for each day of an inpatient hospital stay – regardless of the actual treatment costs. The benefit is paid for stays of at least 24 hours and is limited to a maximum of 90 days per calendar year.
You will find a complete overview of all the benefits that this product provides on the hospital daily allowance insurance page.

Frequently asked questions about daily allowance insurance
A daily allowance is a daily cash benefit that you receive if you are temporarily unable to work due to illness or accident. It is intended to make up lost earnings either entirely or in part, so that you can still cover your ongoing costs even following any loss of earnings.
Daily allowance insurance provides financial security for both employees and self-employed persons in the event of illness or lengthy incapacity to work following an accident.
The waiting period is the period of time between the start of your incapacity to work and the time when you receive the daily allowance. The insurance does not pay out any benefits during this period – the employer often pays the salary during this period.
Our tip – you can set the waiting period yourself. Select a period that is right for your personal or professional situation. The longer the period, the lower your premium.
The following waiting periods are available for Visana daily allowance insurance:
- Daily allowance insurance as per IPA/VVG: 0–7, 10, 14, 21, 28, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 240, 270 or 360 days
- Daily allowance insurance as per HIA/KVG: 14, 21, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 270 or 360 days
- Agricultural daily allowance insurance: 0, 3, 7, 14, 21, 30, 60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 270 or 360 days
- Nursing care daily allowance insurance: 730 days
Visana daily allowance insurance can be paid out for different periods, depending on the insurance model:
- Daily allowance insurance as per IPA/VVG: max. 730 days less waiting period
- Daily allowance insurance as per HIA/KVG: max. 720 days following expiry of the waiting period
- Agricultural daily allowance insurance: max. 720 days less waiting period
- Nursing care daily allowance insurance: max. 3,650 days (10 years)
With Visana, you can set the amount of the daily allowance individually depending on the insurance model:
- Daily allowance insurance as per IPA/VVG: CHF 5 to CHF 685 per day
- Daily allowance insurance as per HIA/KVG: CHF 5 to CHF 30 per day
- Agricultural daily allowance insurance: CHF 10 to CHF 300 per day
- Nursing care daily allowance insurance: CHF 15 to CHF 200 per day, in CHF 5 increments
This means you can optimally tailor insurance cover in line with your own personal needs and financial commitments.
Yes, you can change the scope of benefits under your Visana daily allowance insurance during the term. Please note, however, that a medical examination is required should you wish to increase the insurance benefits.
If you are unable to work for an extended period due to illness or accident, this may result in a loss of earnings. Our daily allowance insurance helps to close these gaps – for people in employment, persons without gainful employment and farmers.
- The IPA/VVG daily allowance is suitable for persons performing gainful activity (employees and self-employed persons) and guarantees an income in the event of illness or accident after the employer’s obligation to continue paying wages has expired.
- The HIA/KVG daily allowance is suitable for persons without gainful employment, such as students and homemakers, and provides benefits in the event of illness, accident or maternity.
- The agricultural daily allowance protects the income of farmers and their families in the event they are unable to work on the farm. It is also possible to take out insurance for agricultural assistants as well as temporary staff.
Employers are obliged by law to continue to pay the salary for a particular period of time in the event of illness – often with the support of business daily allowance insurance. This generally covers only part of the salary and is paid out for a limited period of time.
With our daily allowance insurance as per IPA/VVG, you can secure your income yourself – irrespective of your employer. You benefit from a longer payment period (up to 730 days) and can tailor the scope of insurance individually.
This means you can supplement the protection provided by your employer and ensure that your income is guaranteed, even in the event of a prolonged illness or lengthy incapacity to work following an accident.
Yes, daily allowance insurance is worth getting even if you are employed. This is because the employer’s obligation to continue the payment of salary applies for a limited period of time, and often does not cover the entire period of absence.
With Visana’s daily allowance insurance – whether under the HIA/KVG, the IPA/VVG or for agriculture – you can extend the period of cover up to 730 days, and thus enjoy financial security for a longer period of time.
It provides protection against major loss of income, especially in the event of prolonged illnesses or lengthy incapacity to work.
