Benefits of car insurance

Liability insurance is a legal requirement in Switzerland. It covers all property damage and bodily injury caused to third parties – including damage to house walls, garden fences and vehicles.

The liability cover included in Visana car insurance offers the following benefits:

  • Cover of up to CHF 100,000,000 per incident for property damage and bodily injury

  • Customer-friendly one-year contracts

  • Guaranteed fixed premium

  • Gross negligence included

Comprehensive cover is for damage to your vehicle. You can choose partially comprehensive cover (e.g. for damage caused by martens or hail) or fully comprehensive cover (for damage to your car that is your own fault, in addition to the partially comprehensive cover). You can also take out cover for parked-vehicle damage.

Partially comprehensive cover

With Visana car insurance, the partially comprehensive option insures the following:

  • Glass parts, tail lights and headlights (LED, xenon) automatically included

  • Damage caused by martens and collisions with animals

  • Damage caused by natural hazards, e.g. hail

  • Free choice of car repair shop

  • In the event of a write-off, reimbursement of the car’s value when new, during its first two years in operation

Fully comprehensive cover

With Visana car insurance, the fully comprehensive option insures the following:

  • All the benefits of the partially comprehensive option

  • Up to CHF 3,000 in cover for transported items, including work-related equipment

  • CHF 1,000 in reimbursement of mobility costs for public transport and taxis upon vehicle breakdown or forfeiture of driving licence

  • Gross negligence included

Parked-vehicle damage

With Visana car insurance, the parked-vehicle-damage option includes the following:

  • Damage to the car when parked, caused by third parties

  • No limit on the sum of the parked-vehicle damage

  • Unlimited number of parked-vehicle-damage incidents per year

Enhance your insurance cover to suit your requirements, with these top-up cover options:

Passenger accident insurance

In the event of an accident, we support you financially if you or your passengers are injured. The medical costs of injured passengers are covered for five years after the accident. In addition, if the accident leads to invalidity or death of a passenger, the insured sum is paid out.

Breakdown service / assistance

If your vehicle is immobilised by a breakdown or accident, we immediately arrange your return home or onward journey and organise a towing service.

Reduced deductible upon collision damage

For a small surcharge, you can reduce your deductible upon collision damage.

Motor legal protection insurance

In the event of legal disputes, we support you with our personal and motor legal protection insurance.

Frequently asked questions about car insurance

Visana’s car insurance covers losses in Switzerland, Liechtenstein and all European countries listed on the international insurance card.

The international insurance card should be carried when driving abroad along with a European Accident Statement. That way, you have documentation to prove that you are sufficiently insured.

Partially comprehensive insurance covers losses over which you do not have any direct influence, for instance, theft, glass breakage, marten damage, fire or natural events such as hail.

Fully comprehensive insurance contains all benefits available under partially comprehensive insurance, plus protection for damage to your own vehicle for which you are at fault, as well as third-party vandalism.

Partially comprehensive insurance therefore provides protection against damage from external causes, whereas fully comprehensive insurance also covers your own driving errors.

Fully comprehensive insurance is worth it above all for new or valuable vehicles. As the age of the vehicle increases, the current value falls – and therefore also the benefit of fully comprehensive insurance.

It generally makes sense to switch to partially comprehensive insurance if:

  • your car is more than 5 to 7 years old;
  • repair costs could be higher than the residual value of the vehicle;
  • you are willing to cover minor damage yourself.
