Our health insurance and other insurance solutions for young adults

How does your health insurance change when you turn 18? What types of insurance are genuinely important for young adults? We have the right answers and solutions, whether for your first own home, a term abroad or just a contribution towards your gym membership or new glasses.

Basic insurance and top-up insurance

Once you are 18, you are responsible for your own health insurance, and your premium goes up too. This is because you automatically move into the next age group.

Basic insurance is compulsory in Switzerland and the benefits payable for treatments are fixed by law. However, basic health insurance does not cover everything. A lot of young adults would like a contribution towards their gym membership or the cost of their contact lenses. This is why voluntary top-up insurance exists – to fill the gaps in basic insurance and provide additional benefits.

Our health packages are a simple, straightforward way to access the most important top-up insurance options for you. All you have to do is choose the package that best suits your needs – S, M or L – and close all the gaps in your basic insurance with just one package.

Frequently asked questions around health insurance and other insurance for young adults

General questions

If you have health insurance with Visana, you benefit from a 10% discount on the premium for your household contents or personal liability insurance. Find out about the additional attractive discounts we offer on premiums for our top-up insurance plans, such as no-claims bonuses, health discounts and more.

As long as you live with, and are financially dependent on, your parents, you can generally be covered under their insurance. This applies even if you live where you are working or training during the week, for example, in a flatshare or studio apartment.

Important: Let us know that you live away from home during the week. That way, we can avoid gaps in your coverage or misunderstandings.

You are normally covered by your parents’ personal liability and household contents insurance for as long as you are studying or training and are not yet financially independent. That generally means until you complete your first training.

Health

The policy is a type of contract between you and the insurance company. It sets out all the key details and conditions of your insurance.

The deductible is the amount that you have to pay yourself each year if you have medical treatment. As a general rule, the higher the deductible, the lower your health insurance premium. Deductibles ranging from CHF 300 to CHF 2,500 are available. Tip: The lowest deductible of CHF 300 is only worthwhile if your healthcare costs amount to around CHF 2,000 or more per year.

The retention fee is the amount you pay yourself once your deductible has been used up. The retention fee is 10% of the eligible costs, up to a maximum of CHF 700 a year for adults.

Premiums go up because you switch from the “child” category to the “young adults” age group. Under the Health Insurance Act (HIA/KVG), families with children under the age of 18 are eligible for financial relief. That means health insurers can offer discounts for children and young people. You cease to be eligible for these discounts as soon as you turn 18. Your premium will go up again when you turn 25. This is because you switch from the “young adults” category to the normal premium for adults. We can tell you exactly how much your premium will be in October each year, once the rates for the coming year have been set. Furthermore, the amount by which your costs change depends on your place of residence, how much you pay as a deductible and the insurance model you have chosen.

The page Health insurance age groups: why is my insurance suddenly more expensive?” tells you more about changing age groups in basic and top-up insurance.

We recommend a separate policy because it enables you to gain your own experience of health insurance. But regardless of whether you choose a separate or joint policy, you become responsible for your health insurance, out-of-pocket expenses (retention fee and deductible) and premium as soon as you turn 18. Having your own policy gives you the advantage of having your own customer file and separate access to the myVisana customer portal. This means you can manage your insurance affairs yourself whenever it suits you using the Visana app. Obviously, you can stay covered by your family’s insurance too. If this is what you want to do, your parents need an authorisation form from you, so that they can continue to deal with all contract amendments, benefits statements and premium payments on your behalf. You decide which option is best for you.

Home

Since a flatshare generally consists of one main tenant and several subtenants, each person needs their own household contents insurance. If the main tenant is the only person with household contents insurance, their insurance only covers items in shared spaces. It does not cover the other tenants’ personal belongings.

Household contents insurance covers the damage caused by a fire in the apartment. The same applies if a burst water pipe, natural flood or washing machine floods out the flat. Household contents insurance will also replace personal, movable property that is stolen during a burglary. It covers furniture, clothing, shoes, sporting equipment, electronic devices and your pets. If you also take out comprehensive household contents insurance with Visana, your belongings are protected against damage of any kind. Should your drone crash-land, for example, Visana will pay the cost of repairing or replacing it.

Personal liability insurance is generally voluntary in Switzerland. However, it is always useful to have because mishaps only take a second and can quickly end up costing a lot. Personal liability insurance covers you for the financial consequences of damage that you cause to other people – known as third parties – or other people’s property. Say, for example, if a plant pot slips out of your hands, falls onto the balcony of the rented flat below and breaks some of the tiles. Or if you accidentally injure someone while you’re playing sports.

Yes, our ‘Comprehensive household contents’ top-up insurance plan covers electronic devices such as laptops, mobile phones and cameras. This insurance covers not only electronic devices, but also damage to sports equipment, musical instruments, hearing aids, prescription glasses, sunglasses and drones.

Legal protection

We are here for you if you get involved in a legal dispute. Legal protection insurance from Visana saves you money and stress by paying for lawyers, court costs, expert opinions and mediation up to a maximum amount of CHF 500,000 per insured claim. The maximum amount for disputes outside Europe is CHF 100,000. If necessary, we will also pay an advance as bail so that you can avoid pre-trial detention.

Travel

Regardless of whether you’re going on holiday, taking a city break or studying abroad for a term, it’s always a good idea to take out travel insurance.

If you fall ill or are involved in an accident during your travels, travel insurance will cover the costs of your medical treatment abroad. This is particularly important, given that healthcare can be very expensive in certain countries and your basic insurance often does not cover all the costs. If something unexpected happens, you may have to cancel or return early from your holiday. Travel insurance covers all or part of your cancellation costs, depending on the insurance model you choose.

Vacanza travel insurance is included in health packages S, M and L for eight weeks per trip. For longer trips, we offer long-term insurance that covers you for up to twelve months.

Car

We recommend that new drivers take out partially comprehensive insurance in addition to compulsory liability insurance for motor vehicles (car insurance). If you have a new or very expensive car, we recommend fully comprehensive insurance because this also covers damage that you cause yourself. Options such as breakdown assistance or motor legal protection insurance provide additional security.
