Visana grows and impresses with strong year-end result
Bern, 19 June 2025 – The insurance group Visana can look back on 2024 as an extremely successful year. It increased net profit to CHF 168.8 mn (2023: CHF 4.7 mn). As of this year, Visana insures 887,500 private customers (previous year: 856,500) and 16,850 business customers (previous year: 16,750). The 40,500-person increase in basic insurance is particularly striking. In top-up insurance, Visana consolidated its strong, third-place market position.
Bülent Atalay to become new Head of Private Customer Sales at Visana
Bern, 24 April 2025 – With effect from 1 May 2025, Bülent Atalay will become Head of Private Customer Sales at Visana and also a member of the Executive Board. The 48-year-old will take over from Roland Lüthi, who is retiring after 18 successful years at Visana.
Founding of a new industry association: speaking with one voice for the Swiss healthcare sector
Bern, 20 June 2024 – Switzerland’s largest health insurers are founding a new industry association, which will commence operations at the start of 2025. The new association aims to end the duopoly of the two current umbrella associations and to thus strengthen representation of the health insurance industry’s interests. In future, the stakeholders will speak in unison and with one voice.
Authorities give green light for Joint Foundation of Atupri and Visana
Bern, 19 June 2024 – Over recent months, the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority (FINMA), the Federal Supervisory Authority for Foundations (FSAF/ESA), the Bernese Supervisory Authority for Foundations (BBSA) and the Competition Commission (COMCO) have granted the necessary approvals for the merger by combination of the Atupri Foundation and the Foundation Visana Plus. The Joint Foundation of Atupri and Visana was entered in the Commercial Register today. It has over a million customers and is the clear market leader in the Espace Mittelland region.
Visana Group: renewed growth and solid year-end result in 2023
Bern, 29 May 2024 – The Visana Group demonstrated its ability to perform in a tense environment in 2023. Net profit amounted to CHF 4.7 million (2022: 76 million). The basis for the solid financial results in 2023 was provided by successful investment activity, a convincing underwriting result in top-up insurance and a high degree of cost discipline. As of 1 January 2024, a total of 856,500 customers were insured with Visana. Thus, Visana is continuing to expand its leading market position in Espace Mittelland.
Long-term partnership between FC Thun and Visana
Bern, 1 May 2024 – As of the upcoming 2024/25 season, Visana will be a partner of FC Thun. This football club from the Bernese Oberland is entering into a long-term five-year partnership with Visana.
Visana acquires Maklerzentrum Schweiz AG
Bern, 25 April 2024 – Visana Beteiligungen AG acquired service provider Maklerzentrum Schweiz AG with effect from 22 April 2024.
FOPH approves the VIVA health plan
Bern, 18 September 2023 – Last October, the health insurer Visana, the member clinics and hospitals of Swiss Medical Network and the Canton of Bern announced the launch of the healthcare organisation Réseau de l’Arc. The associated insurance product, an alternative insurance model known as the ‘VIVA health plan’, has now been approved by the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). VIVA will be introduced on the 1 January 2024, exclusively for residents of the Jura Arc region in the cantons of Bern, Jura and Neuchâtel.
Visana and Swiss Medical Network launch nationwide strategic partnership in integrated care
Bern, 11 July 2023 – The Bernese insurance group Visana and the hospital group Swiss Medical Network are expanding their partnership in the field of integrated care nationwide. Following the launch of Switzerland’s first fully integrated healthcare organisation, in the Jura Arc region, Visana and Swiss Medical Network intend to establish further regional integrated care clusters throughout Switzerland in the coming years. As part of this strategic partnership, Visana Beteiligungen AG is acquiring an 11.1% stake in Swiss Medical Network’s share capital. This investment in Swiss Medical Network is being made via a share capital increase.

Atupri and Visana merge to form a nationwide leader in health insurance
Bern, 7 June 2023 – The two Bernese health insurers Atupri and Visana will merge on the 1 January 2024 to form the ‘Atusana’ health insurance group. The new group will have over a million customers. Atupri and Visana are combining their strengths in performance and innovation, but will remain operationally autonomous and continue to act as strong independent brands. With this strengthening of their market position, Atupri and Visana are enabling their customers to benefit from a broader range of products and services, as well as more means of access. The merger is subject to approval by the supervisory authorities.
Innovative car insurance from Visana without a no-claims-bonus system
Bern, 1 March 2023 – For the first time ever, on 1 March 2023, Visana is launching its own car insurance throughout Switzerland. ‘Worry-free on the road’ is the slogan for Visana’s new car insurance. Instead of relying on vague estimates regarding the number of kilometres expected to be driven when the insurance is taken out, Visana uses an innovative telemetry-based solution. Settlement based on the exact number of kilometres driven also enables savings of up to 20 percent on premiums. Once again, Visana is showing that it is ‘close to the people’ and in tune with the digital age.
Modern co-working for a healthy approach to work in central Bern
Bern, 3 November 2022 – As a health insurer, Visana also sets standards in workplace design. Visana now offers a co-working space for companies and private individuals at a central location near the Federal Palace. A glance behind the venerable facade reveals how successfully the former restaurant Gfeller has been converted for flexible and healthy working. The doors will be open to all interested parties from 4 to 11 November.

‘Save your friends’ 2021: interactive video provides reality check
Bern, 4 July 2021 – Men make up the vast majority of accident victims in Switzerland. The number of accidents rises sharply among 15-to-19-year-olds and only stabilises at a lower level from the age of 30. In their joint campaign ‘Save your friends’, Visana and the Swiss Life-Saving Society (SLRG) have been working for three years to prevent drowning and water-related accidents in this population group. This year, they are doing so with an interactive reality check and celebrity support from the two Kambundji sisters.

Mobile app with virtual insurance card for 2.5 million insured persons
Solothurn, 1 December 2020 – A useful supplement to the plastic insurance card that we all carry in our wallets has arrived. As of now, 2.5 million insured persons can use the virtual insurance card. This practical solution is currently offered by the three health insurers Visana, Groupe Mutuel and KPT. Other health insurers will follow in the coming months. Over 5,000 service providers and around 2,000 pharmacies have the infrastructure required to use this so-called ‘VICARD’.
Visana, Allianz Care, CSS and Zur Rose Group launch comprehensive digital health platform
Zurich, 13 November 2020 – For the first time in Switzerland, partners from various areas of healthcare will work together to jointly found a company for the operation of an integrated digital health platform. When officially launched on the Swiss market in the 2nd quarter of 2021, the platform will offer interactive and straightforward access to healthcare services for all residents of Switzerland. The aim is to improve the quality of treatment and improve the efficiency of processes. The platform is open to all healthcare players: insurers, physicians, hospitals, pharmacies and other providers. Start-up funding is provided by the partners Allianz Care, CSS, Visana and Zur Rose Group.

Bern, 28 September 2020 – Hospital stays can be expensive. Visana offers greater financial security for such situations with its new hospital capital insurance: After inpatient treatment in hospital, Visana customers receive the insured amount directly and can use it as they see fit.

Bern, 22 June 2020 – The Swiss Life-Saving Society (SLRG) expects more people than usual to be drawn to open waters during the summer of COVID in 2020, thus greatly increasing the risk of accidents. This adds particular importance to the ‘Save your friends’ campaign run by SLRG and Visana to prevent swimming accidents. The campaign for this season starts today and features a new element: a so-called ‘safety check’ that allows people to test for themselves whether they are behaving correctly in rivers or lakes when swimming or boating.
